MP3 Players & Troubleshooting

• I hear my MP3 player but I cannot see it! Help!

This usually happens when you have a custom layout. Look in your code and delete the following line:

object, embed{ width:0px; height:0px;}

• My song won't play. I don't hear any sound. What's going on?

Please make sure you put the correct MP3 URLs. Sometimes it takes a while for the song to load depending on your internet connection speed and the website where you host your MP3 files. It could also be the MP3 file is out of bandwidth.

• What's bandwidth?

Bandwidth is a fancy term for the amount of data being transferred over the internet from the file host servers. Let's say you have a 10MB photo and one of your buddies takes a peek at it from their computer. In this case, the bandwidth used would be about 10MB, because that is about how much data was sent to your buddies computer.

• What's a URL?

URL (pronounced like the letters "U," "R," "L," not like the word "earl") stands for Uniform Resource Locator. A URL is the Internet address of a particular site or document available via the World Wide Web, the one that appears in the white bar at the top of your screen.

• How do I get MP3 URLs?

From Boxstr, SnapDrive.net, FileXoom.com and FileDen.com:
After uploading your songs, click on "Direct URLs" and copy the URL link.

You can also go to "My Files" then follow these steps:

• Your MP3 search sucks. Where else can I find MP3 URLs?

We know this very well. No worries, we're working to make it a lot better! In the meantime, you can check out these sites:

1. Skreemr.com
After you enter the search term, right click on the song title and copy the link.

2. Espew.com
After you enter the search term, click on a song title. It will open a new small window and you'll see a text box on the bottom of the player. Copy the link. Do not include 'http://www.espew.com/?urls='.

For example:
http://www.espew.com/?urls=http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF231623-02-02-02.mp3 becomes
http://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF231623-02-02-02.mp3

• Where can I host my MP3 files?

  • Boxstr (5GB storage space, 500MB rollover daily bandwidth)
  • HotLinkFiles (1GB storage space, 8GB bandwidth/month)
  • FileDen (1GB storage space, 5GB bandwidth/month)
  • FileNanny (Unregistered users: 10 MB storage space, 160MB bandwidth/day. Registered users: 500MB storage space, 5GB bandwidth/month)

• How do I convert a MP3 file song into a URL for MySpace?

Click here for a thorough explanation.

• How do I convert a song to a .mp3 format?

To convert a song's file format using Apple's iTunes:

  1. Choose iTunes > Preferences, then click the Advanced button at the top of the window and click Importing.
  2. From the Import Using pop-up menu, choose MP3 Encoder.
  3. Select one or more songs in your library, then choose Advanced > Convert Selection to MP3. (The menu item changes to show what's selected in your Importing preferences.)
  4. To convert all the songs in a folder or on a disk, hold down the Option key and choose Advanced > "Convert Selection to," then choose the folder or disk containing the songs you want to convert. All the songs in the folder or on the disk will be converted except songs you purchased from the iTunes Store. (Purchased songs are encoded using a protected AAC format that prevents them from being converted.)

• Why are my songs playing at a high speed (sounds like chipmunks)?

This happens because you're having a bitrate problem that can be fixed by using a mp3 bitrate changer to change the bitrate to a fixed bitrate. To solve your issues:

  1. Download/Install LAME and extract to your Program Files directory (if you like)
    http://lame.sourceforge.net
  2. Download/Install Audacity
    http://audacity.sourceforge.net
  3. Open affected MP3
  4. In the bottom-left hand corner, change your sample rate from 8000|16000 to 22050 khz or higher.
  5. File > 'Export to MP3' (nicely resampled)
  6. Your first time you'll be asked to specify the LAME mp3 library file 'lame_enc.dll'. Simply continue through the prompts, and browse to the directory of where you installed LAME. Select 'lame_enc.dll' and you're all set!
  7. Your new resampled MP3 should be waiting!
  8. If you want to change the bitrate (96 kbps, 128 kbps, etc ) go to Edit > Preferences >> File Formats tab, and at the bottom under MP3 Export setup define it manually. (128kbps default)

• How many songs can I have on my player?

You can add a total of 100 songs for each playlist.

• My player/widget isn't showing up?

1. You may not have the latest version of Flash player. Download it here for free.

2. Your player is inside a div. For instance when you've made an overlay profile for yourself. Easy fix. Look in the player code in your profile. Remove wmode="transparent" and replace it with bgcolor="000000". You can use any hex color. Click here for a color chart.

3. You must be a Mac user! We are all Mac users too and it is a known Firefox bug. Basically, if you have a see-through layout using the CSS opacity, the Flash element on top of it disappears.
Fixing this bug actually causes another bug for Internet Explorer 6 (using png doesn't work on IE6) so we will implement the fix once we get the majority of our users switch to IE7. In the meantime, Mac Firefox users, make an opaque layout.
