Common - Finding Forever

Let me start by saying this, "I am a fan". A fan of music, a fan of Hip-Hop and a fan of Common. Since the "Can I Borrow a Dollar" days, a lot has changed. I've been there for it all. With the recent trend of "rap" production swaying towards a club feel, soul-less, 1986 casio style keyboard, salsa rhythm slop fest...(whew) I warmly welcome Kanye Wests Motown inspired, double time female vocals and boom bap drum patterns on the most recent Common release "Finding Forever". While this is not Common at his hardest, he's bringing it as a now grown man should. Real.
Front to back and back to front, I've given this album it's worthy playing time. While some of the tracks are as strong beat wise as their vocal message, I was feeling his heartfelt love ballad "I want you" the most. I initially skipped this track upon the first few spins. The beat is solid. Will.I.Am (of the Black Eyed Peas) lends his hand to a track that seems completely built for Commons intentions. The tempo is perfect, the head bobbing drums flawless, and the synth is enchanting. When the chorus kicks in, it's nearly dream like. The production also takes a turn at the bridge. Though it's very drastic, it shows off the production skills that this huge pop-star possesses. This is no Fergalicious joint.
There isn't a single line Common could utter that would change my feelings on him. He's a solid vocalist. Not solid in a technical way, but solid with his passionate delivery. When he says meaningful things, we all know he means it. With phrases like "I hope the moon and the stars re-align me and you" and "this here was made before we were born" both spoken in reference of a lovely relationship that ended, we know it's truth. Writers take many different approaches to say what they feel and whatever approach Common takes, works.
